A selection of nice cracky studio 1 tracks. Most tracks are in a mellow mood, if you like the style.

Unbelievable; what a catologue Coxsone had. I think Soul Jazz still has a difficult job in selecting the tracks for their compilations. So much choice. Also check out Heartbeat. I definitely liked the Gladiators release "Studio 1 Singles".

1. Rolando Alfonos - "Mr Fashion"
(taken from album "King of Sax" Studio 1 - lp)

2. Al Campbell - "Take a Ride"
(taken from "Pirates Choice" Studio 1 - lp)

3. "Take a ride version"
(taken from "Studio 1 Dub" Soul Jazz - cd)

4. Ernest Ranglin "Surfin Pt 2" (Studio 1 - 7" b side)

5. Willie Williams "Addis Ababa Pt 2" (Studio 1 - 7" b side)

6. Cedric Brooks "Why Can't I"
(taken from "Im Flash Forward" Studio 1 - lp)

7. Gladiators "Love and Meditation"
(taken from "Presenting" Studio 1 - lp)

8. Wailing SOuls "Got To Be Cool"
(taken from "Presenting" Studio 1 - lp)

9. Carlton & the Shoes "Forward Jerusalem"
(taken from "Love me Forever" Studio 1 - lp)

10. The Cables "My Broken Heart"
(taken from "What Kind of World" Studio 1 - lp)
This is taken from a 70ties pressing from Peckings (UK release) in Jamaican Stereo.
Vocals right, rhythm left channel. Sorry for the listeners with headphones.
You better skip the track. If you play it on your hifi, you can create your
own version by playing with the balance knob. Have fun...

Lee Perry's productions recorded at the Black Ark Studio have always facinated me the most. I used to collect his records in the eighties. The tracks below are just a sample. Hope you enjoy it (make sure you play it on a proper hifi system). Check out the great Black Ark stuff that is still being released on Heartbeat and Pressure Sounds.

1.) The Black Notes "African Style" / "African Dub"
(7" Black Art)

2.) Lord Creator "Such is Life"
(taken from album "Heart of the Ark Vol. 2" released on Seven Leaves)

3.) Upsetters "Such is Dub"
(taken from album "Megaton Dub" released on Seven Leaves)

4.) Junior Murvin "Tedious"
(12" Island Limited Edition pressing)

5.) Gregory Isaacs "Mr Cop"
(taken from album "Extra Classic" released on Echo)

6.) Ras Michael & the Sons of Negus "Stop Pay the Price for Sin"
(taken from album "Disarmament" released on Trojan)

Nowadays UK reggae gets - compared with the early eighties - kinda snowed by recordings coming from JA. Although UK delivered some really great music by LKJ, Dennis Bovell, Macka B, Matumbi, On U Sound, Aswad and of course Steel Pulse (also check the album "Don't Call Us Immigrants released on Pressure Sounds" and read the book "Bass Culture").

Steel Pulse really impressed performing live especially in this show taking place in November 1982 at the Paradiso club Amsterdam. Check it out and remember that without the reggae scene in the UK, reggae would probably not have landed on the european continent at all probably. Recommended listening Steel Pulse: the album "Handsworth Revolution" is a real classic. A reggae record collection without it is not complete.

10 Minutes of Culture live at Paradiso Amsterdam 1978 or 79 (don't know for sure). Found this tape in my basement again, it's full of dropouts but still excellent stuff. This one I recorded in 1986 from a broadcast by VPRO radio in the Netherlands. I am still wondering if they have the master tapes of the full concert? Classic recordings that should be released on cd; I would buy it immediately!

In case anyone has more details about this show (e.g. musicians), please let me know.
